Thomas Power O'Connor was born in Athlone, County Westmeath, in 1848. The eldest son of a local shopkeeper and the daughter of a Connaught Rangers officer, he grew up in a Liberal household before leaving for Galway to study history and languages. That small border town gave him his first years, but his life soon carried him toward London politics and a long career in the House of Commons.
