Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1845, and grew up to found a network of homes that took in nearly 60,000 children before his death in 1905. He established the first home at 18 Stepney Causeway in 1870 after witnessing the harsh conditions faced by orphaned boys in London. His work transformed desperate streets into places of shelter, proving that one man's refusal to look away could rebuild entire lives.
