This commemorative plaque records: Formerly The Assembly Room King's Head Inn In this room the Royalist Officers surrendered on the conclusion of the Siege of Colchester. August 27th 1648
Lord General Thomas Fairfax led the Parliamentarian forces to victory over the Royalists, including Charles Lucas, George Lisle, Earl Lord George Goring, and Lord Arthur Capell, during the English Civil War; their surrender in Colchester marked a significant defeat for the Royalist cause.
