Thirlestane Castle is a medieval castle and first World War hospital in the Scottish Borders. The Maitland family owned the land from 1587, built a large square keep on the old fort, and made the house their seat. James VI visited in 1591 for a wedding, the duke extended the castle in the 1670s, and the trust still cares for the place.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Thirlestane Castle as Castle (medieval), Hospital (first World War). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Thirlestane Castle was built by the Douglas family in the 14th century and later held by the Scotts of Thirlestane, becoming a significant seat of the Scott family from the 16th century onward. It is important as a well-preserved example of a Scottish medieval castle and for its historical associations with prominent noble families.
