Thirlestane Castle stands on Castle Hill near Lauder, where Maitland families have shaped the land since 1587. The site carries older violence, for James III’s favourites were hanged from Lauder Bridge not far away, and an English artillery fort once occupied the ground during the Rough Wooings. Sir John Maitland built his square keep upon those military foundations, turning a weaponised hill into a noble residence. The castle later grew under the Duke of Lauderdale and again in the nineteenth century, while the old peel tower still lies ruined a mile southeast.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Thirlestane Castle as Park (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Thirlestane Castle was built by the Douglas family in the 16th century and later held by the Ker family, becoming their principal seat. It is important as a well-preserved example of late medieval and early Renaissance architecture in the Scottish Borders.
