The Skeely is a sea cliff composed primarily of Carboniferous sandstone, formed around 300 million years ago through sedimentary deposition in ancient river and delta systems. It is notable for its exposure of durable rock layers that resist coastal erosion, providing a clear section through the geological history of the Northumberland coast.
