The Grange

Detached four-bay single-storey house with half-dormer attic, extant 1894, on a T-shaped plan off-centred on single-bay full-height gabled projecting breakfront abutting single-bay single-storey lean-to glazed porch. Occupied, 1911. Set in landscaped grounds.

A house representing an integral component of the domestic built heritage of the rural environs of Tuar Mhic Éadaigh [Toormakeady] with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling the contemporary Cappaghduff Cottage (extant 1914) in nearby An Cheapaigh Dhuibh Thoir [Cappaghduff East] (see 31310909), confirmed by such attributes as the deliberate alignment maximising on panoramic vistas overlooking Loch Measca [Lough Mask]; the compact plan form centred on an expressed breakfront; the slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a feint graduated visual impression; and the miniature gablets embellishing a high pitched gabled roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, thereby upholding the character or integrity of a house having historic connections with Anthony L. Blake MD (d. 1916), 'Dispensary Medical Officer [and] Surgeon [and] Physician [late of] The Grange Tourmakeady County Mayo' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1919, n.p.).
