Tewkesbury Grammar School white plaque

This white commemorative plaque records: Tewkesbury Grammar School 1576-1972 Founded in 1576, Tewkesbury Grammar School was housed for over two centuries in the Abbey. Pupils were both fee paying and the beneficiaries of annuities. In the 19th century the school moved twice. Then, in 1906 the 50 pupils were installed in this purpose built building. By 1952 the school had over 150 boys and moved to Southwick Park. In 1972 the school with others formed the new 'Tewkesbury School'. Sir Raymond Priestley (1886-1974), the renowned scientist and explorer, who accompanied both Scott and Shackleton on their Antarctic Expeditions, was an 'old boy' and there is a memorial to him in Tewkesbury School.
