Teach Cormac

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Teach Cormac is a circular fairy fort in County Meath, Ireland, defined by a thirty-nine-metre earthen bank, outer fosse and external reach. It sits inside a larger hillfort with a central mound and an east-north-east entrance causeway. The name suggests Cormac, but the shape suggests older hands: a ring built to keep something out or hold something visible.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 10 July 2007 Circular area defined by earthen bank (diam. 39m) with outer fosse and external bank (max. ext. diam. 73m). Entrance and causeway at ENE. Within hillfort (ME031-033005-). Mound (ME031-033009-) in centre. (Macalister 1931, 25-6)
