Robert the Bruce transformed Tarbert into a vast royal fortress in 1325, paying masons to widen walls and burn hundreds of chalderes of lime beneath a tightening Scottish crown. James IV later added a tower house and summoned Parliament to the bay, proving the site remained a powerful royal instrument rather than a forgotten border marker. The McAlister family eventually lost the place to decay, and neighbours robbed its stones to build the village, erasing much of the grandeur Bruce had purchased with gold.
