Tannery in Unknown Townland

Tannery

What is recorded here

Frances Street and St Patrick Street hid a brutal tannery beside the Poddle, where unknown workers likely stank the air with rotting hide and chemical water. The river carried the poison downstream while residents lived above the filth. Excavations in 1993 pulled that forgotten industry back into view, proving the pretty streets stood behind a dirty engine of local trade.
Excavations in 1993 revealed evidence for industrial activity along the W bank of the river Poddle in the rear of houses along Frances Street and the houses fronting St Patrick Street (Halpin 1994, 25).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
