Sweathouse in Gortnavreeghan — Report the wrong picture

Gortnavreeghan holds a tiny D-shaped sweathouse on the broad summit of Slieve Rushen, beside a rectangular stone enclosure and near the remains of a small lake. The chamber is so small that a person would have stood close to hot stones, breathing steam until the mountain air felt like water. The nearby millstone quarries suggest the site served people who cut, carried and shaped stone for a long distance.

Situated on a slight S-facing slope on the broad summit of Slieve Rushen, with the remnants of a small lake c. 80m to the SE. This is a D-shaped structure (int. dims 1.3m ENE-WSW; 0.7m NW-SE) but only the base of the walls (max. H 0.7m) and the edges of the mound (Wth c. 0.6m; H 0.2m) survive. It is at the NE side of a rectangular enclosure (int. dims 8.7m NE-SW: 4.5m NW-SE) defined by a few stones. Bedrock is exposed in the enclosure and the initials ‘GSK’ are incised in it at one point. The millstone quarries (CV009-026001-), with which it was probably associated, extend northwards for c. 500m. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 29 May, 2014
