Sweathouse in Doolargy

Set into the S slope of Carrabane beside a small roadway. Outside is largely obscured by modern field walls. Marked on the 1938-9 OS '6-inch map' as 'Teach Alluis'. The entrance (Wth 0.4m; H 0.65m) is low, narrow and lintelled and leads to a circular interior (int. diam. NW-SE 1.25m; H 1.35m). Stones at the entrance may be the remains of floor paving. Linked to the tradition of sweating for healing, such sites were often used for ritual purification or to cure ailments like rheumatism and skin conditions. The name "Sweathouse" suggests a connection to ancient Celtic or pre-Christian practices, later possibly associated with local saints or folk cures.
