In 2001, engineers cutting the N25 Youghal Bypass uncovered two curved slot-trenches at Ballynacarriga, one spanning 6.6 metres and the other stretching 2.8 metres parallel to it. Fourteen post-holes and a possible internal gully clustered around these marks, while two corn-drying kilns sat nearby. The excavator suggested the trenches formed a windbreak for the kilns, though no direct physical link joined them. The close arrangement implies people shaped the local breeze to dry their grain, turning an ordinary field edge into a cooperative workshop against the weather.

This structure was excavated within an enclosure (CO067-087----) at Ballynacarriga in 2001 during advance work on the N25 Youghal Bypass. This structure is evidenced by two slot-trenches. The slot-trench at the N was semicircular in plan (diam. 6.6m; Wth 0.28-0.4m; D 0.1-0.2m) and was best preserved along the N arc where it had vertical sides and a flat base. This trench became gradually shallower along its E and W arcs. The second smaller slot-trench (C 2.8m E-W) was of a similar width and depth and was traceable on a parallel arc c. 6m to the S. There was no direct physical relationship between the two trenches. Fourteen post-holes and a possible internal gully were associated with the slot-trenches. According to the excavator (Noonan 2003e, 29), the close proximity of this structure to two corn-drying kilns (CO067-087004-, CO067-087006-) suggests that it may have been a windbreak of some kind.
