What is recorded here
Stone Circles (Sites of) is a passage tomb in Knocknarea South, County Sligo, Ireland. It sits 52 metres southwest of Maeve’s Cairn and 31 metres southwest of another possible passage tomb on the mountain summit. Eight boulders, each about 1.1 by 0.7 metres, form the ruined remains of a chamber now partly hidden by heather. Two split boulders lie on the west side, aligned north-northwest to south-southeast, marking what may have been the chamber’s southwest edge.
Located on a low N-S elevation, on the summit of Knocknarae Mountain, 52m SW of a large passage tomb, known as Maeve’s Cairn (MA014-076003-), and 31m to SW of a possible passage tomb (MA014-076005-).
An irregular cluster of eight boulders (av. Size c. 1.1m x 0.7m) appear to represent the very ruined remnants of a chamber, now partly concealed by heather. On the W side of the cluster, there are two recumbent split boulders (H 0.5m), aligned NNW−SSE, which may represent the SW side of the chamber. No race of a cairn or enclosing stone circle is evident. This is likely to be one of the monuments on Knocknarae, which was disturbed in the early 1800’s by Richard Chamber Walker, a local landowner and antiquarian. (Bergh 1995, 240, site 6). This is a National Monument (No. 153) in state ownership.

Stone circle; likely Bronze Age. Associated with significant passage tombs, suggesting a ritual or funerary landscape linked to early Irish mythology and the Cú Chulainn and Queen Maeve legends.
