Standing stone in Tirmacroragh

Standing stone

What is recorded here

No king, cathedral or lost city is named. The stone stands .96m high in a field where young trees and whins are closing over the old path between Culdaff and Bootog. Anyone who walked that shortcut could have read the stone at once: this is the way, this is the boundary, this is the place where the road bends. It is not a failed monument or a childish mark. It is a small instruction still giving an answer.
A standing stone .96m high × 0.32m wide at base × 0.2m NNW-SSE. The immediate area is overgrown with young trees and whins. The landowner indicated that a shortcut between Culdaff and Bootog ran through the same field so the stone may be a route marker. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
