Standing stone in Rathgeran

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Mentioned in local legend as the burial place of a chieftain and his wife, the Rathgeran standing stone is a granite pillar aligned north-northeast to south-southwest. It stands 1.20 metres tall with a rectangular section measuring 0.96 by 0.60 metres. The clear geometry and deliberate alignment suggest the stone marked a boundary, a meeting place or a remembered life rather than falling into the field by chance.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Granite stone, rectangular in section (H 1.20m; 0.96m x 0.60m). Aligned NNE-SSW.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
