Enclosure in Rathgeran — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Rathgeran is a circular enclosure in County Carlow where a small rectangular field now sits inside the old boundary. The original ringfort may have measured thirty metres across, but a later stone-faced bank partially buried that shape. Both circles still trace the hill, recording the moment human ownership changed the meaning of the ground.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as circular enclosure. Traces of earthen bank (max. H 1.1m) visible at NE and NW. Small rectangular field enclosed by stone-faced earthen banks superimposed on original enclosure. Possibly a ringfort (est original diam. c. 30m).
