Standing stone

What is recorded here

Miltown Meenahony and Castlelyons share one boundary, yet neither name fits the whole place. Miltown Meenahony belongs to the parish and castle estate. Castlelyons belongs to the county and modern town. Both names point to the same red stone, river water and living people.

'It is 55ins in height, 44ins in width and 11ins thick (Hartnett 1939, 202). Anomalous pair of standing stones (CO050-073002-) c. 50m to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age, the stone may have been part of a ritual or territorial marker. Local names like 'Gallauns' suggest possible folklore connections, though specific meanings or uses remain unrecorded.
