Standing stone in Lissard (barretts By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Lissard is a stone circle with a pair of standing stones about 300 yards to the SW in the second field. One stone is 51 inches high, 80 inches broad and 5 inches thick. The exact spot has slipped from local memory, but the measurements keep the stone visible: a tall thin blade set in an ordinary field, waiting to be found again.
Condon (1916, 69, No. 28) recorded stone '51 inches high, 80 inches broad, and 5 inches thick', in this townland. He located it in '....the third field' from pair of standing stones (6562). Grove-White (1905-25, vol.1, 329) located the same stones '....in the second field to the SW of Lissard stone circle (6448) and about 300 yards distant'. Exact location cannot be determined, not known locally. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
