What is recorded here
No trace survives of the 'Gallaun' marked on the 1st edition of the OS map and described in the OSNB (Kilmalkedar, 42) as '3 feet (.9m) high and about 2 (.6m) broad'. It was located in a field named 'Gort na Sprice' (local information), on the NW slopes of Lateevemore overlooking Smerwick Harbour and the intervening lowlands.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 155. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
