Standing stone in Knock (duhallow By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Knock is a standing stone in duhallow By. and one of the oldest visible places in Ireland. The stone still stands on the SE-facing slope beside Glen River. People have passed it for generations, and it has watched the valley change around it.
On SE-facing slope, on W side of Glen River valley. Bowman (1934, 250) recorded two 'dallans', aligned E-W, seven feet apart. East stone was '5ft 9in by 3ft 1in by 1ft 10in'; W stone was '5ft 8in by 2ft 2in by 1ft 5in'. According to local information, two stones formerly set parallel either side of gap; removed in 1970s. No visible surface trace. (pers. comm. Paul Walsh) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Probably dating to the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age (c. 2500–800 BCE), the stones may have functioned as boundary markers, ritual monuments, or astronomical alignments. Local folklore sometimes associates such paired stones with legendary figures or supernatural events, though specific traditions for this site are not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
