Standing stone in Killeen (muskerry East By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Red stone rose forty-eight inches above the Killeen soil, a compact gallán waiting for human hands. It stood in Muskerry East until removal erased its shadow, leaving behind only memory and the faint suggestion that people once gathered around its warmth. What they worshipped, marked or mournered remains unknown, but the stone’s brightness implies purpose.
According to Condon (1916, 137) 'gallán of red stone (H 48ins; 41ins x 12ins)'. Removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Dated to the prehistoric period, likely Neolithic or Bronze Age, the term "gallán" suggests a ritual or ceremonial function, possibly associated with early Christian or pagan practices. Its removal and lack of current context make its specific meaning or folklore uncertain.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
