Standing stone in Killeen (muskerry East By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Four reddish standing stones marked successive fields along a Muskerrey road, each rising three to four feet above the soil. Condon recorded them in 1916, but human hands have since removed them, erasing a repetitive stone rhythm that may have guided neighbours through familiar land.
According to Condon (1916, 137) 'gallán in the middle of each one of four successive fields parallel to the road. These are reddish stone (H 3-4ft; c. 1ft x c. 6ins)'. Removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
