Standing stone in Gravelstown

Standing stone

What is recorded here

One stone still stands in Gravelstown, leaning slightly on a flat, forgotten field. The other is gone, leaving only a shallow dent and a smell of wet earth. Together they marked a line across the landscape, perhaps for ceremony, perhaps for warning. The empty place still answers when the wind changes, as if remembering the weight it once held.
Located on a fairly level, low-lying landscape. A stone (dims c. 0.5m x c. 0.2m; H c. 1.5m) has a roughly pointed top and is generally aligned NE-SW. Standing stone (ME011-046001-) is c. 70m to the WNW and the site of standing stone (ME011-047----) is c. 100m to the ENE, but this stone appears to have been removed (OSAP). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 10 April, 2019
Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age, the stone's alignment and form suggest it may have had a ritual or territorial function. No specific folklore or detailed local tradition is recorded for this site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
