Carraig an Ghalláin stood over six feet tall in Edmund Nagle's land during the 1940s, a vertical witness in Gortacareen before the exact spot slipped from human memory. The stone may have marked a boundary, honoured a forgotten person or simply resisted the creeping grass. Its disappearance is not a loss of fact but a return to mystery, the kind of mystery that belongs to open country rather than locked rooms.

In the 1940s, a stone called 'Carraig an Ghalláin [which is] over 6 feet [1.8m] high' was recorded in Edmund Nagle's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). The precise location of this stone is not known and it may have been in that part of Gortacareen townland which is on OS 6-inch map 76.
