Standing stone in Brenanstown

This recently discovered standing stone is located on a hillslope in pasture adjacent to Brenanstown House. It is formed of granite (H 1.15m; Wth 0.4m). Two small fragments of cremated bone were found directly in front of this stone when it was excavated in 1993 (Carroll 1994, 13). The stone had been set in a pit (diam. 0.8m) and was supported by smaller packing stones. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy. Revised upload on: 21 April 2018.

Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the presence of cremated bone fragments suggests a funerary or ritual context. Such stones may have marked burial sites or served as memorials within a wider ceremonial landscape.
