What is recorded here

Three stones still stand in Ballycumber, arranged like a coarse triangle around a low mound near the church. Thomas Stanley wrote about them in 1870, but nobody can find them now. They may have fallen, been buried, or simply stopped belonging to the place people still point to.

Three standing stones encircling a mound (OF007-053002-) (JRSAI 1870, 28), unlocated within the townland of Ballycumber. Described by Thomas Stanley in 1870 as 'Three such stones occupy the centre of a 'foradh' near the island or Ballycumber church. They form a kind of triangle or it might have been a circle; within them a small mound rises to a height of two or three feet' (JRSAI 1870, 28). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
