Standing stone in Ballyboght

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Standing stone in Ballyboght is a leaning Cork stone caught in bog memory rather than lost to forgetting. Bowman measured it at nearly six feet tall and just under two feet wide, set half a mile from Sean Og's Cross. The exact spot has slipped from human certainty, but the stone still tilts inside the landscape like a sentence waiting for another witness.
One of two standing stones (9884) recorded by Bowman (1934, 567) in this townland; 'In bog c. 500 yds from Sean Og's Cross...5ft 9in by 1ft 10in by 8in, in an inclining position'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
