Standing stone in An Tóchar

Standing stone

What is recorded here

An Tóchar holds a rectangular standing stone aligned north-northeast to south-southwest on a northwest-facing pasture slope in County Cork. It rises 1.27 metres, measures 0.9 by 0.3 metres, and still occupies the kind of open rural landscape where people once pastured, passed, marked boundaries or remembered events. Its exact purpose has not survived into clear fact, but its shape and placement suggest human attention rather than abandoned debris.
In pasture on NW-facing slope. Rectangular stone aligned NNE-SSW (H 1.27m; 0.9m x 0.3m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
