Stanage is a prominent gritstone sea cliff or coastal rock feature in the Derbyshire Dales, formed from Carboniferous-age millstone grit, deposited around 315–325 million years ago as sand in ancient river and delta systems. The rock was later uplifted and exposed by glacial and fluvial erosion, and is notable for its dramatic landscape and use in local industry and rock climbing.
