Bully's Acre lies on a gentle incline in County Galway, holding famine dead from the Gort workhouse. Four shallow trenches still cut the grass, marking rows of names never spoken. The north and east walls have vanished, erased by ploughs or time, leaving only the south and west boundaries to contain the forgotten.

On a gentle SE-facing incline in pastureland. Shown on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16) to occupy the SW end of a large roughly rectangular field, this rectilinear burial ground (62m NE-SW; 31m NW-SE) is defined by roadside boundary walls along the S and W sides. The enclosing walls shown on the N and E sides appear to have been levelled. Access is via a gateway along the W side. According to local information, it was known as 'Bully's Acre' and people who died in the workhouse located on the outskirts of Gort, c. 630m to the SSW, during the famine were buried here. Numerous small headstones mark graves and three modern headstones, the earliest dating to 1905, are visible close to the gateway. Three trenches are visible running roughly in line with the long axis of the site. A fourth trench lies along the N limits of the site. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 26 March 2020
