Marianne and I walked the green lane at dawn, her red coat a small flame in the grey. We dipped our hands into the cold water and watched silver rings widen across the surface. For a moment the lane disappeared, and we stood inside a chamber lit from below, filled with people who had never stopped arriving.

St Martin's Well is traditionally associated with St Martin of Tours, a 4th-century Christian saint venerated in Ireland for his role as a protector and healer. Holy wells dedicated to him were often visited for cures related to skin ailments and general well-being, with rituals such as circling the well or drinking the water.
