St. Kevins Well

Situated on the N side of a stream at the foot of a steep bank. Rough oval hollow (dims. 2m x 1.5m) defined on three sides by loose stones and small boulders. The hollow is now dry. The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1928, 69) mention the tradition of tying rags to the surrounding bushes. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Linked to St. Kevin, a 6th-century Irish monk and founder of Glendalough, the well is traditionally associated with healing and fertility. Local folklore suggests that making a pilgrimage to the site and performing specific rituals at the well could ensure good health or successful childbirth.
