This grey commemorative plaque records: St James Hospital Founded by William deWarenne the second Earl (d. 1138), as a hospital for 24 elderly or infirm brothers and sisters and for pilgrims and the sick. It was maintained by Lewes Priory and survived the dissolution.
St James Hospital was founded in the early 12th century by William de Warenne, providing care for the elderly, infirm, pilgrims, and the sick; it is historically significant as one of the enduring medieval hospitals that survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
