St Fagans Castle: Mansion; Welsh Folk Museum

House

What is recorded here

St Fagans Castle is an Elizabethan mansion in Cardiff where more than forty rebuilt Welsh buildings now stand beside it. The Earl of Plymouth gave the castle and land in 1946, helping create the Welsh Folk Museum that opened in 1948. Iorwerth Peate shaped the idea after Skansen, but Welsh stone and brick made the work harder than Swedish timber. The museum preserves everyday Welsh life instead of hiding it behind glass.
The National Monuments Record of Wales records St Fagans Castle: Mansion; Welsh Folk Museum as House from the Post Medieval period. The saved point comes from the official national record. Inclusion does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
St Fagans Castle was originally built in the 13th century by the de Spensers, a prominent Norman family in Wales, and later held by various Welsh gentry. It is important as the site of the National Museum of Wales's Welsh Folk Museum, which preserves and displays traditional Welsh domestic architecture and rural life.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
