St. Bernards Well

Situated in a small N-S valley with a stream just to the W. Originally dedicated to St. Baramedan (Ryland 1824, 271), the patron saint of Kilbarrymeaden parish, it has become corrupted to St. Bernard's Well. This is a large circular drystone-lined well (diam. 4.2m) with three steps leading to the water at N. There is a small rag tree (WA025-041001-) beside the well. Compiled by: Michael Moore. Dedicated originally to St. Baramedan, the patron saint of the parish of Kilbarrymeaden, the well is associated with local Christian traditions and may have been a site of pilgrimage or healing. The name corruption to St. Bernard suggests later influence or confusion with the more widely known St. Bernard of Clairvaux.
