Sophie Bryant was born in Sandymount on 15 February 1850. She became a brilliant mathematician, school leader, and suffragist who helped found the London School of Ethics and Social Philosophy. She cycled, rowed, hiked, and taught with restless energy until a climbing holiday in the Alps took her life in 1922.
