Kennels Cottage stands beside Skibo Castle in Sutherland, a small Post Medieval house tucked into the castle estate. It may have kept guard dogs, stored gear, or sheltered workers serving the main castle. The distinction between kennel and dwelling dissolves when survival depends on alertness. A person sleeping beside hungry dogs remains awake to danger, turning residence into watchfulness.

Skibo Castle, Kennels Cottage is part of the larger Skibo Castle estate, which was built in the 19th century by Sir William Burrell, a Glasgow shipping magnate and art collector. The estate and its structures, including the Kennels Cottage, are remembered for their historical association with Burrell and for their later donation to the people of Glasgow, forming part of the Skibo Estate Trust.
