No wall from the old castle remains, yet workmen digging foundations for the new building uncovered two buried cists hidden beneath the demolished site. The place has continually reinvented itself, changing from a threatened thatched bishop's house into a grand Carnegie residence and now a corporate venue. Each owner seemed to believe the land required more shape, more room and more visibility.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Skibo Castle as Building (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Skibo Castle was built in the 19th century by Sir Robert McAlister, a wealthy industrialist, and later became associated with Andrew Carnegie, who used it as a summer residence. It is remembered for its architectural significance and its connection to one of the world's most famous industrialists.
