Williamstown Castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a SE-facing grass slope where maps still mark its absence. The land rises into wide sky, inviting imagination to fill the hole left by forgetting. What was built there, who watched from it, and why it disappeared remain unknown. The place preserves its own mystery, refusing to hand everything over.

On a SE-facing slope of rising grassland in upland area with good views in all directions. Castle is indicated as site of Williamstown Castle on both the 1st (1840) and subsequent 1903 ed. Built in the 17th century, Williamstown Castle was held by the MacMahon family, a prominent Gaelic Irish clan in the area. The site is historically significant as it reflects the strategic and territorial importance of upland strongholds during the early modern period in Ireland.
