Site of Original Hunterstoune Village and Hunter Castle

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Hunterstoune Village and Hunter Castle occupied North Ayrshire before the modern town took their name. Whether a castle kept a coast road or a family merely claimed the land, people lived around that first centre. The village may have crowded the castle foot, marketed fish or simply sheltered from Ayrshire storms. Forgetting the first Hunterstoune is easier than admitting the present town rose from a smaller, sharper place.
Site of Original Hunterstoune Village and Hunter Castle is shown as a archaeological place on the public map of North Ayrshire. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
