Site of Kellys Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Kellys Castle vanished before the 1946 map, leaving no stone or ditch for eyes to find. It may have been a small fortress, a boundary marker, or a forgotten residence in the rolling Galway grassland. The land absorbed the walls, the walls absorbed the name, and the name survived only on paper.
In undulating grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular area enclosed by a broken line. On 3rd ed. (1946) only the 'Site of' symbol is shown. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
