Knockacurra hides a ruined castle atop a natural ridge in County Tipperary, invisible except when marked on old maps. The Civil Survey (1654-6) called it a castle wanting repair on the lands of Laffally, while the OS Letters (1840) described only south and west foundations still standing. It may have been a small local seat, a watchdog house or a forgotten strongpoint for the Curroge area. Whatever it was, the ridge kept its shape long after the walls gave up their purpose.
On top of a natural ridge. Not visible at ground level. The Civil Survey (1654-6) mentions, ‘On the lands of Laffally in this Parish [Curroge] stands a castle wanting repayre’ (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 40) which appears to be the castle on Knockacurra. According to the OS Letters (1840), ‘Only the foundations of the south and west walls of the Castle are observable. The breadth of the foundation of the south wall in the present state is four feet [1.2m]. The materials of the structure appear to be the same kind as those used in Seefin Castle [TS067-058----]. The walls, it appears, were grouted. The foundations of walls of other edifices that stood within the ground enclosed in the bawn of the Castle are still seen here’ (O’Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 115 (315). Indicated as 'Castle (site of)' on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (revised 1954) ed. OS 6-inch map with surrounding earthworks (TS067-039002- and TS067-039003-) which are also not visible at ground level. Seefin Castle (unclassified) is located c. 600m WSW.
