What is recorded here
Death came quickly in that exposed country, so people dug holes and covered the dead instead of carrying them far. The ground swallowed names, fevers and ordinary lives until it became a quiet chamber beneath the grass. What is missing is not a gap but a shape: room for the dead to occupy and be remembered without naming every victim.
