Site of Black Castle — Report the wrong picture

Blackcastle rose on an oval mound in Tipperary, mapping a ruined stone chamber before soil and forgetting erased its edges. The land still holds hidden limestone beneath the grass, waiting for rain or rhythm to reveal what the castle swallowed. It is not gone so much as paused, holding its shape inside the earth until someone stops long enough to listen.

In level area of fallow arable land. Sited on top of elongated, oval mound (TS069-057002-). No visible surface trace of castle masonry, although loose limestone rocks visible in places and others detected below surface sod in central and S area of mound. Named as 'Site of Black Castle' on 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map and depicted as a ruined building orientated NW-SE, measuring approx. 11m NW-SE x 9m NE-SW. On the 1906 ed. OS 6-inch map the site of the castle is depicted within an earthwork platform (TS069-057002-). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 20 May 2014
