Ballygown Castle vanished before the first map drew its ghost, leaving only a low rise and a memory near Dean Holme's house. The upland views still stretch in every direction, but the stones that once commanded them have surrendered entirely to grass and time. What remained was a point on a survey, not a wall to touch.

Situated on low natural rise of ground in an upland area with extensive views in all directions. Indicated as the site of a castle on the 1st ed. (1840) OS 6-inch map. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that the 'site of a castle is also pointed out in Ballygown townland near Dean Holme's house but no portion of it exists at present' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 119).
