Siege of Cahir Castle

Essex dragged heavy guns ten miles through rain and mud in May 1599, breaking the castle that everyone called impregnable. Cahir stood on a river rock with six towers and thick walls, yet artillery smashed through in days. The greatest army England had sent to Ireland bled strength on a small fortress while the real rebel host watched from beyond the river.
