Shipley Country Park, opened on 26 May 1976, was officially inaugurated by W.L. Miron Esq. C.B.E., T.D., D.K., J.P. of The National Coal Board, with Councillor W.E. Blake J.P., Chairman of the Leisure Committee, representing Derbyshire County Council. The park is significant as a green space developed for public recreation in an area historically associated with coal mining.
