The Cromford Canal, completed in 1794, was one of the earliest canals in England and was primarily built to transport coal and other goods from the Derbyshire coalfields to Cromford and beyond. It is associated with William Jessop, a prominent engineer of the time, and is historically significant as a pioneering example of inland waterway development in the Industrial Revolution.
